Sherylee's journey to leading Kangatraining New Zealand
Hey I'm Sherylee, Country Leader of Kangatraining New Zealand and a babywearing consultant.
Not long after my first child was born, I was diagnosed with postnatal depression. Exercise was a huge part of managing it and helping me to feel healthy and strong. When my second child came along, I was desperate to continue to exercise, but she had silent reflux, which made traditional exercise almost impossible. She needed to be upright as much as possible, so babywearing was a huge part of our lives, but I was missing my exercise.
Then we discovered Kangatraining, it gave me the ability to exercise AND wear my baby. But it was so much more than an exercise class. It was a place where parents came together to support each other. It was no pressure socialization. It was a community. It was my village. Now my Kangabuddy is 9 and is at school, but I still teach Kanga. Why? Because I love providing a space where parents can come together to meet. To chat. To find support. To get out of the house. To exercise. I love watching the babies grow, and the parents get stronger. I feel so honored to be part of their lives.
I get so much joy out of it that I have gone on to train as a Babywearing Consultant so I can support families in their babywearing journey as well, and recently I became the head trainer of the Australasian Babywearing Association by the Australian Babywearing Association and I now train consultants here in NZ so they can support parents. I feel so lucky that what started with a baby who needed to be held has turned into a career in supporting families.
